Literature is a great tool for all English Language Learners and it can be a great tool that can be used at any grade level. Many different types of activities can come from using literature in the classroom. Teachers can perform read alouds, students can read as a group, to each other, or by themselves. Literature is a great way for students to learn new vocabulary words, and practice the words that they have all ready learned as well. Through using literature, students will also improve their grammar and writing skills. Literature opens up the reader to a new world, and this is another reason why it can be a great tol in a clasroom for English Language Learners. Many activities and projects can comne out of literature and a teacher should never have problems with coming up interesting and educational lesson plans.

Activity 1: Good Reads

One of the activities that I would use in my classroom would be using Goddreads gound at www.goodreads.com. Good reads is a website where students can blog about what they have read and if they enjoyed the book. Almost every book that a student reads can be found and rated at this website.I adapted this activity from our course, but would make some changes to it. I would used goodreads throughout the school year. This would we a project where every week I would require the students to blog about the book that we are reading currently. I would have the students rate the book and also give a good description about the book. The students would also be asked to write down vocabulary words they had trouble with, as well as concepts in the story that they do not understand. Each students would have to respond to another student's post every week, we as a class would build a discussion forum for the books that we are reading.

I would also assign students to do the same assignment that they are reading on their own. I would encourgae the students to use this tool to help other students who are trying to find a book to read. They could rate the book on how intersting it was, and also how duifficult the book was to read. Students would recieve two grades on both assignments every week. I believe that these assignment can encourage students to read, and can also help students find books at their levels, and books that can interest them. The discussion can helps tduenst practice their language skills, without being afraid off speaking in front of people.

Activity 2: Composing Literature

This is an activity that I remember doing when I was in High School, and I will adapt parts of the activity to make it work in an ESL setting. This activity should be done in grade 9-12 The requirements for the activity must be adjust based off of the grade level. Students will be asked to take a Dr. Suess book and rewrite it using their own language. The students will be able to change the story and charcters as much as they want as long as the story has the same message as the Dr. Suess book. The book should still rhyme and it should still follow the same rules as the original. The students will be asked to create the book, by drawing out the pictures for each page and making it look like an original book. This activity can get students to be as creative as they want to be in coming up with new charcters and a plot. Students will also be challenged to write the story in tehir own words, which will help them with improving their vocabulary and sentence structure.
